Bylaws of the Night Putting Committee

Article IName

The organization is the Night Putting Committee (also “N.P.C.” or “Night Putters”).

Article IIPurpose

The Committee exists to invent and play putter-only golf under night conditions, to keep a shared record of its expeditions, and to preserve the customs that make those rounds fair, chaotic, and worth repeating.

Article IIIMembership

  1. 1.Membership is by invitation of the Committee, not by application alone.
  2. 2.A prospective member may be invited as a guest on an expedition. Guest status does not confer membership.
  3. 3.After an expedition that includes a guest, the Committee may hold a vote of induction. Admission requires the affirmative consent of the assembled members present for that vote.
  4. 4.Members share the rights and duties of the Committee, including inventing holes, keeping expedition stories in confidence where appropriate, and upholding these Bylaws and the Rules of Night Putting.

Article IVExpeditions

  1. 1.An expedition is any Committee outing at which night putting is played.
  2. 2.The Committee may keep photographs, notes, and other records of expeditions for the use of members.
  3. 3.Side bets and other wagers invented during an expedition are a matter among the players present and are not obligations of the Committee as a body.

Article VRules of Play

  1. 1.All rounds of night putting under Committee auspices are governed by the Rules of Night Putting attached as Appendix A.
  2. 2.Local hole inventions and course conditions do not override the Rules unless the Rules themselves allow it (for example, unanimous agreement to use a club other than a putter).

Article VIAmendment

These Bylaws and the Rules of Night Putting may be amended by agreement of the members of the Committee. Amendments should be recorded so the archive stays honest.

Appendix A — Rules of Night Putting

  1. 1.

    No practice strokes. A practice stroke results in disqualification from that hole.

  2. 2.

    Heckling. Heckling is allowed and encouraged, subject to:

    • Hecklers shall not touch the person putting;
    • shall not block the putter’s view of the ball or the target;
    • Non-contact interference (including a well-timed breath in the ear) is permitted.
  3. 3.

    Wrong hole. Playing to the wrong hole requires payment of double the current value of the hole.

  4. 4.

    Land mines. No player may move an existing obstacle anywhere on the course during the round. Obstacles (“land mines”) include, without limitation, beer bottles, clubs, coolers, furniture, and anything else already in play.

  5. 5.

    Lie. No improving your lie for any reason under any circumstances.

  6. 6.

    Two tie, all tie. When two or more players tie, the hole is a tie for all.

  7. 7.

    Putters only. Only putters may be used, unless every player present unanimously agrees otherwise for a given stroke or hole.

  8. 8.

    Carryovers. On any tie, the hole carries over.
